I live by the quote: ‘There is no option to give up, know your strengths and shine’.

Seventeen years ago, my husband and I made the life-changing decision to migrate from India to Australia. Back in India, I was diligently preparing for the IAS (Indian Administrative Services) exams. I had never imagined that I would one day leave my homeland, but life has its unique ways of guiding us to our destined places.

Since moving to Australia, one of my proudest moments has been when my work in financial literacy for migrant women was acknowledged in the Victorian Parliament by our local MP. This recognition means a lot to me as it symbolises my contributions to my new community.

Every single day, I miss my family deeply. Their absence is felt profoundly during my milestones and celebrations. Despite this, migration has shaped me into an independent, ambitious, and practical woman. I’ve learned to identify my own strengths and have become capable of assisting others on their journeys as well.

Living in Melbourne has its perks. The numerous events here help ease the homesickness, though I still miss my friends dearly. At home, we practice Hinduism and encourage our children to celebrate all festivals, blending our cultural heritage with Australian customs.

I live by the quote, “There is no option to give up, know your strengths and shine”. This mantra has guided me through many challenges and triumphs. My advice to fellow migrants is to thoroughly research before moving, utilise all available resources, and maintain a strong, resilient mindset.
