Richard Stockman

I want to understand my ancestry. I came here in 1972, and while I feel I have inherited many Indian traits, I don’t feel I have had sufficient exposure to fully understand and embrace my heritage and ancestry.

My favourite quote is from former Australian skipper Michael Clarke: ‘Practice, practice, practice because your opponents are practicing now, and they will beat you.

My journey has been quite the adventure, starting from my early years in New Delhi at the age of two, to where I am today, wearing multiple hats as a real estate agent, winemaker, and community leader here in Australia.

Growing up wasn’t easy, especially with the challenges of racism. However, boxing taught me discipline and determination, traits that have stuck with me throughout my life. My academic journey was quite unique, as I was the youngest student at Roseworthy College (now known as Adelaide University) and later served in the Australian Navy during the 1st Gulf War.

After some time, I moved to Canada to explore new opportunities, where I pursued a career as an Air Traffic Controller. However, my entrepreneurial spirit led me back to Australia with a vision. In 2001, I took the leap to establish “Stockman Wines”, becoming the first Indian-born winemaker in the country. Alongside my winemaking ventures, I’ve also delved into the world of real estate, earning a reputation for my negotiation skills and meticulous attention to detail.

But my passions extend beyond the professional realm. I serve as a Councillor, advocating for sustainable development and environmental conservation, while also staying deeply connected to my Indian heritage. Engaging with the Indian community and participating in cultural festivals like Holi brings me immense joy.

Supporting migrants is something close to my heart. I believe in helping them integrate into Australian society, embracing our way of life while celebrating their own cultural roots.

In essence, I see myself as someone striving to make positive contributions both in my professional pursuits and within my community. My commitment to excellence and empathy towards others drives me forward.
