My move to Australia gave me a unique opportunity for self-discovery. Stripped of my corporate identity, I began to explore different aspects of myself and what truly mattered.
I was born and raised in Mauritius, but my journey brought me to Australia six years ago after meeting the love of my life. My career as a successful banker, which involved extensive travel, took a dramatic turn when I moved to Australia and transitioned into the role of a housewife. This change led me to discover my true self, surrounded by people who believed in me more than I believed in myself.
One of my biggest achievements was shedding my corporate title to find a new purpose: serving others through my business as a self-mastery coach and as a regional representative for Oceania and Southeast Asia at the Women Federation for World Peace International (WFWPI) UN office. My company, Kickass Buddy Coaching, has been awarded the Global Partner Award for Peace and Prosperity for Generations to come.
Mauritius is a multi-ethnic society where people come together to celebrate all festivals as one. What I miss the most is this shared sense of unity in celebration. As I continue to work on my sense of belonging, I am striving to understand and embrace Australian culture to feel more connected.
My new roles enable me to contribute meaningfully to society, enhancing my sense of belonging and fulfillment. Interacting with people from different cultures and learning from them has helped me grow as a better person. By continuing to embrace the diverse cultures around me, I am gradually finding my place and feeling more connected to my new home.
Maintaining strong connections with my home country is essential. I stay in touch with family and friends weekly, celebrate traditional festivals in Melbourne, and keep up with current events in Mauritius. As a coach, I frequently engage with Mauritians back home, sharing my knowledge and new insights, which enriches both my personal and professional life.
My favourite quote is: “Life does not happen to you but for you”. Supporting immigrants during their transition is crucial for their well-being and integration into their new communities. Language assistance plays a key role by providing accessible language classes that boost confidence and help them navigate their new environment. It’s important to remember that linguistic diversity is a strength, empowering immigrants to thrive and contribute meaningfully to their newfound home.
Everyone needs someone in their corner. Migration requires time and patience. Stay positive, resilient, and proactive in overcoming challenges. Seek support from fellow immigrants, local community organisations, and online forums. Building connections with others who understand your experience can provide invaluable support.
